The Wall !!

The term Wall has been synonym to Rahul Dravid for more than a decade now. Still people talk about laxman's elegance, sehwag's flamboyance, sachin's strokeplay when dravid is batting with either of those. I know when Sachin will score his 100 it will a huge occasion for fans worldwide, including me. But is it fair to keep talking about Sachin even when Dravid is the one scoring hundreds right now and that too at critical junctures?

I have not become his fan recently after he scored two centuries. Have always admired his technique and commitment to his team. I thought its time to look back at his contribution to Indian Test team and briefly(till he gets his 100 ;)) forget about Sachin. Not to start a comparison war but I will try comparing him with Sachin at few occasions in this blog just to lay emphasis on Dravid's contribution to Indian cricket.

Dravid has by far been the most technically correct batsmen in Indian team for last 2 decades now..maybe more...maybe ever. Its amazing that for someone like Dravid, who has scored runs all around the world and is second only to Sachin in number of runs scored in Tests, there is not as much said and written about as about Lara, Ponting and Sachin.
Possible reasons could be:
1) He is not playing ODIs anymore and people see less of him, so have less to say about him.
2) He doesn't score his runs at the same rate as other 3 do, and hence is not someone whom people enjoy watching and writing about.
3) He happens to be playing in the same team as Sehwag, Laxman, Sachin.
4) He is unlucky that whenever he scores runs, someone else also does and at a much better strike rate.

Whatever the reason be, I think he isnt endowed with as much following, love and appreciation as even Dhoni. I have been a avid Sachin supporter. Have switched on the TV when he has come to bat and switched off so many times when he is out. But have I watched any match because Dravid is batting. Nope.

Its time to apologize to the wall for the same and thank him for Adelaide Oval, for Eden, for Lords, for TrentBridge, for Hamilton and many many more when he stood up, sometimes with a teammate and sometimes all alone.

Bummer!!

Those of you who don't know what Bummer means...its synonymous to "kela ho gaya" in Hindi. Soon you will get to know why the post is named this way.
5 months ago I was a happy guy working in office on weekdays doing some copy paste stuff, getting paid a decent money for that, life was good :). But then it was repetitive, not so much fun. Before that I spent 4 years in college having lots and lots of fun. So the idea was to go back to college and have fun for 2 more years. In order to get this fun back I,
a) mugged word list (really boring)
b) quit my job (really daring)
c) took a big government bank loan (really tough)
and came to US for graduate studies. And what do I get?

3 hours a day classes on tuesdays and thursdays. Cant complain about this. But this comes with a baggage.
a) On mondays, wednesdays and Fridays I have to go work for 8 hours a day.
b) Almost every week have to spend a night working on really tough assignments(I am not kidding, it is tough)
c) Read about biology( a subject I hate) because it is related to my independent study topic.
d) Stay indoors because the maximum temperature outside is -8 degrees.
Real bummer!!

PS: Wrote this watching dravid bat as slow as I have seen anyone bat(really boring). Truth is I love salt lake city. I love the snow, the school and everything about salt lake city :)

Life @25

Steve Jobs says "for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something".
My answer has been no for over few years now and I do wanna change something. But the question is what? Lets explore some possible changes---
a) Half of the people I know are doing/wanna do MBA. I could not score 99%tile in a class of 30 people at school, forget getting it amongst 300,000 people who appear for CAT :(
b) Out of the remaining, half are looking for change in job. I got one by chance, and miracles don't happen everyday ;), so no chance.
c) Half of the remaining will soon be getting married. Sounds scary. No more Saturday morning cricket, no more "aao baithein". Though According to Anuj* its not bad as it sounds :P.
d) Girlfriend. I am a tried and tested failure in this field. Not a boyfriend material for sure. If you love you sleep more than having coffee with a girl, or like watching cricket more than giving her company for shopping, you have no future in this field. Just quit!!

Well anyways what good did looking into mirror everyday did to Mr Jobs, he lost all his hair, didnt realize he is wearing the same T shirt for the last 33 years, got kicked from his own company.

But the guy still rocks!!!

* All those who dont know what Anuj said , dont scratch your heads. You are not supposed to know it :)

Birthdays!!

Birthdays are the most difficult thing to remember( or may be second most difficult after names or faces :P). So people put reminders on various websites creating birthday calendars. But what if you are not allowed to access external emails? So wrote simplest of scripts to do it and sharing it here in case anyone needs it.

#!/bin/ksh

TODAY_DATE=`date +'%m%d'`

BIRTHDAY_FILE=birthday

RECIPIENTS="your mail ID"

TO_BE_MAILED=mail

NAME=`grep $TODAY_DATE birthday|awk '{FS=" "} {print $2}'`

if [[ -n $NAME ]];
then
echo "To: $RECIPIENTS">$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "Subject: Birthday Reminder" >>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "Mime-Version: 1.0">>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "Content-Type: text/html" >>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "<><>">>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "< equiv ="\" content="\" charset="UTF-8\">">>"$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "< /HEAD><>">>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "Today is $NAME's birthday">>$TO_BE_MAILED
echo "< /BODY>< /HTML>">>$TO_BE_MAILED
`cat $TO_BE_MAILED|/usr/lib/sendmail -t `
fi

You can refine and modify it according to your needs. I just was too lazy to improve it once it started working.Add the script to your ".profile". And as soon as you login you will get an email reminding you of any birthday :). One important thing, because blogger doesnt allow me to write HTML tags i have added space before ever HTML tag, please remove that .All birthday's are saved in a file named birthday in the below format : birthday , followed by name
0101 PAPA
0202 MUMMY
0303 SIS

A lil Poem!!

First day at school, first sight of the English teacher,
and next day you are the love preacher.

Next you fall in love with the first girl you talk,
and start learning from childhood how to stalk

you notice her every move, her every chat,
who she talks with , with whom she sat.

you add her on gtalk, yahoo and facebook,
even take the same tuitions as she took.

Slowly and surely you become friends,
but you are just one in a list of thousands.

Then you move to college which your hopes high,
you see competition is tougher.Sigh!!

You send a SOS friends, to find Miss right,
You need the hard disk night after night ;)

You ask your friends to propose from your side,
one of them is daring, other finds laith machine to hide.

With all courage in the world you go and propose,
in front of hundreds with a bunch of rose.

She says nothing, but her brother gets mad,
you get a tight slap, tighest have ever had.

You go and propose your childhood friend,
little sceptic as your friendship too can end.

You have a breakup and someone new comes into your Kholi,
her lips remind you of Angelina Jolie ;)

You are happy that IIT is tough,
as if you havent had religious names enough ;)

he is CK, not the Calvin Cleen,
with only girls was this guy seen.

he like matchsticks, nothing to do with smoke,
play it slow man, you have a bike not a ferrari 8 stroke :)

he likes every girl in the MMM group,
it wasnt a city but a whole drama troup.

he liked one, with the donald duck walk,
took 3 years to do the first talk :)

PS - 1. Not everything written is intended for everyone. So if you dont unerstand something, its not your fault.
2. Some people might find it familiar, its not unintentional ;).
3. I know i spelled Klien wrongly. That was just to rhyme ;).
4. Feel free to post any queries :)

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish!!

This has nothing to do with the book but with Steve Jobs' Stanford speech. He told you few stories, I will do the same.

The first story is about connecting the dots.
Like him i too wasnt interested in whatever was taught in college. So I bunked classes and did what i found interesting i.e. play cricket, play quake. It was great. Those frags, scoring flags, holy shits everything. those cricket fights, that passion to prevent every run scored. But looking back now I think it was the stupidest thing i ever did. I completely wasted those 4 years doing something that's never gonna do any good to me in future. So though Steve Jobs says it difficult to connect dots looking forward, i would say its neccessary to connect dots looking forward. You can connect dots looking backward only if you drop out of college and still study. But according to me if you are bunking college , studies is the last thing on your mind ;).

His second story was about "Love and Loss".
He found early what he loved doing, I havent. I even dont know what I love doing( May be just sitting on a sofa watching cricket on a giant 50" TV with a McDonals burger in hand and a alrge Coke..yeah that might be it). Anyways i never knew what i wanted to do, but certainly knew what i didnt want to do. Waking up early, working late, lots of meetings and formal attire was certainly on my list. And guess what...I am doing all that and for 2 years now. So again it goes back to the first story, If I would have not wasted those 4 years...

Any Steve Jobs lovers dont take me wrong, I am not trying to make fun of what he said. That was one of the most inspriring speeches you will ever hear. And he is the greatest innovator world has seen, its just some people dont have the courage to follow their heart and throughout their lives will blame it on luck for what they are doing.
Neither is this blog written out of frustation, I am fairly happy with my life...but its certainly not what I love doing :D.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."-Steve Jobs

5 people I would like to meet in heaven!!

Who will be the five people i would like to meet in heaven?
*Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin fans, please dont take me wrong. I dont want him to die, may he live long enough so that my granchildren can see him alive. Its just that i dont see any chance of me meeting him here, so may be i get a chance to do so in heaven :).
*Mahatma Gandhi
Not because he was a great man. Not because he fought for us. But because i want to ask him a question. Could he have saved Bhagat Singh if he wanted to? Anyone who has seen "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" will understand what i am talking about. Its not that i disrespect the guy, but i think he already has too many followers and he can do away with me not being one.
*Bill Gates
I am an apple guy. Confused? Then why do i want to meet Bill Gates and not Steve Jobs ;) ? Answer is simple. Just have one question for him. Did he really copy Mac to create Windows 3.1 as shown in "Pirates of the Silicon Valley" ? I kinda know the answer but want to give him a chance to explain himself (As if he cares what i think about him;)).
*Melissa Theuriau
What the heck? How can a newsreader be so beautiful? Anyone who doesnt know about her please click the link mentioned below or mail me and i can send some really good pics of her. Its not that hollywood doesnt have pretty girls but a news reader and so beautiful kinda makes me believe that beauty can exist with brains :D.
On the topic of pretty girls from hollywood, a special mention to Charlize Theron. I simply adore her, so dont mind meeting her in heaven either :D.
*Dont have a strong opinion about the 5th one. So can be anyone of these :)
a)Robert J Oppenheimer
People say inventions are not bad but bad people use them in a bad way. But i just want to ask this guy what good was he thinking an Atom Bomb can do?
b)Pandit Nehru/ Jinnah
Why did they think of only Pakistan and Hindustan? Why didnt we create a Sikhistan and a Catholistan? We would have more wars that way ;).
c)Ray Croc
Thanks a lot dood. McDonalds rock!! Please create something similar by the time i come up :D.

PS - a) This blog has in no way related to the image. I havent read the book yet :).
b) Apologies to all who have missed being in this list :P

SRK vs SRT

The debate has been ongoing since long that who is the bigger superstar?
Shall we look at their resume?

Shahrukh Khan
Also known as King Khan. Has done around 53 movies till date(excluding special appearances)*.
Most of them were superhit blockbusters.
Is he famous? No doubt about that.
Is he a role model? For some, probably.
Was he under immense pressure due to crowd expectation? Should be.

Sachin Tendulkar
ODIs:422, Tests:156, T20: 1 = Around 1203 days of international cricket.
Like Shahrukh he also is a master in his field. Also known as the master blaster.
Did he do any service to nation making those runs? Arguable, but yes.
Is he a role model? I dont have any doubts about that.
Was he under immense pressure due to crowd expectation? You bet.

Shahrukh has given hit films singlehandedly without much support. And how many times has Sachin done one man army act? Numerous occassions.

So whats the conclusion...isnt it pretty obvious ;)
Watching a hit shahrukh khan movie with your girlfriend at the PVRs -- Rs 500
while having some popcorn and cold drink -- Rs 300
Watching Sachin bat at his prime -- priceless.

*Courtesy Wikipedia.org
PS- I am a big Sachin fan and not so big fan of Shahrukh so this blog might be biased towards Sachin. But would surely like to hear someone's version who can term Shahrukh to be greater than Sachin.

Can you marry someone blindly?

Nah this is not a blog dedicated to frustated singles. But a blog that will help them realize how lucky they are ;).Also whosoever amongst you thought of marrying whoever their parents will choose..please think again. Believe me you wouldnt want to be engaged with someone like:
Cleanser
All cleaning freak girls. Why is your pillow so dirty? Oh God!! I see spiderwebs in your room.
A girl like this has the power to completely destroy your life. Beware!
Expecting
Dont think wild. Its not that 'expecting' but a super-senti girl with high *EQ. Gets senti if you dont call her 10 times a day.Expects you to be a living calendar who remembers everyday...first left cheek kiss day ;).
GORI-lla
Can be a model for whitener ad. Half the time you will be worried about your complexion getting darker. Grow up dood, staart using 'fair and Lovely, for men' :P.
Behenji
How many times  you say that you like a seedhi saadhi gaon ki gori but no one likes to have a behenji when your friends ask you to come to disc, pub, bowling ;).
Richie Rich
This category doesnt mean rich by birth but a girl earning more than you do. Sorry didnt get a better name for the category. But dood take a break, how does it matter if she earns more than you,sit at home, relax. Execute the swimming pool plan ;). Easier said than done, i know this could be an issue.
Flirt
You have her but you know you dont have her. She will have more male friends that you have friends on facebook ;).  Do you really wanna have someone like this??
Game Over
Last but the most dangerous one. A girl who hates sachin, doesnt know a word about Sampras and thinks 'Formula 1' to be a formula given by Einstein.
Aunty Scrooge
She keeping note of every penny spent. Asks your friend to eat less at your party;). (Highly exaggerated...but who cares..its my blog !! :)
Is there any girl left after filtering them on above categories?

*EQ- Emotional Quotient
PS- This blog has been written based on authors own experiences/preferences.Any resembelence to anyone living is purely coincidental. Also i would advise every boy reading this, that he  should not think about this crap seriously else he wont get a girl throughout his life.

Wisden people have no wisdom!!

For all those Sachin fans who felt as offended as I did because Sachin didnt find place in 100 best test innings.
Following are the parameters on which each innings was judged and then ranked. I am not sure of the weightage given to each so assuming equal weightage to all lets compare two innings.
Lara's 375 against England in 1993 and the other Sachin's 136 V Pakistan in 1999.

1.Batting base points
Assuming that this means absolute runs scored and  considering 400 to be equal to 1, we get  375 == 0.9375
136 == 0.34
So Lara's score 0.9375 and Sachin's 0.34. Lara's innings chosen to be in top100 at this point is fair enough.
2.Pitch index
Again name doesnt help much. Guessing it to mean the no of runs scored/per wicket lost on the pitch.
For WI V Eng Pitch Index comes out to be 81.9333
For Ind V Pak Pitch Index comes out to be 25.9
So sachin scored 136 on a pitch that had average of 25.9 and Lara scored 375 on a pich with a average of 81.933. So sachin' sscore for this one will be 136/25.9=5.21 and for Lara it will be 375/81.933=4.577. Total scores this far. Sachin 1 and Lara 1.
3.Bowling quality index
Its Fraser,Lewis,Tufnell and Caddick V Akram, Waqar, Saqlain and Afridi.
Total wickets, bolwing averages everything will suggest that Pakistan bowling attack is better. So this one goes to Sachin.
4.Percentage of score index
Lara 63.2%. Sachin 52.7. So this one goes to Lara.
5.Point of entry index
Lara came in at 1-11 and Sachin at 2-6 so this one will go to Sachin.
6.After point of entry index
Lara had partnerships of 179,183,219.
Sachin had partnerships of 44,23,9,136,36.
I guess this index means how much support he got from teammates. So this one should also go to Sachin.
7.Wickets falling at crease index
For Lara it was 3
For Sachin it was 4.
So sachin gets this one too.
8.Support index
If you see After point of entry index it would suggest that Sachin got less support and should get the benefit here too.
9.Shepherding of tail enders index
Lara was the fifth man out. So no question of tailenders by then unless they playing 7 bowlers ;).
Sachin was the 7th man out, so only person who could have done any sort of shepherding is Sachin.
10.Highest score index
For both players it was the highest score of the innings. So its a tie.
11.Match status index
WI drew the match whereas India sadly lost it. So this one would go to Lara inpite of the fact that cricket is not a one man's game. And India losing doent make Sachin's innings any less great than it is. Still rules are rules. So this one to Lara.
12.Result contribution index
Sachin definitely didnt contribute to loose but still India lost and Lara drew the match so again Lara gets this one.

So in case i have done my primary mathematics course correctly and assuming equal weightage to all criterias we declare Sachin as winner against 10th best innings of all times. There are still 90 lesser innings than Lara's and no place for Sachin, what a shame!!

PS- Lara is a great batsmen and I am in no way undervaluing his innings. Chose this innings to compare just because it was easy to find stats for it.

DADAism!! - Beta

#I cannot play at the cost of my indicator.
Everyone present on this day will never forget this statement said by Dada. We all went to play cricket but the ground was occupied by some kids playing football. Right when Dada was parking his bike a football came flying and hit Dada's bike's indicator. Suddenly we see Dada taking his bike on the way back and on asking Dada uttered this unforgettable line with utmost seriousness.

#Wearing a wrist band on his left shoe.
Yup , you read it right. Dada wears a wrist band on his left shoe so that shoe doesnt become dirty when he changes gears while riding a bike.

#Writing diary to make notes for blogging.
Yes Dada makes notes in order to write a blog :). Very spontaneous :P.

#Following Roadies and Indian Idol like hell.
He will go to sleep at around 7 and will wake up by the smallest sound of Indian Idol theme song. He follows it so religiously as one would follow Sachin Tendulkar's batting.

PS- On a serious note it just shows how much he takes care of his stuff and is fully dedicated to whatever he does be it a recreational activity like blogging. Very unlike guys like me ;)

People throw stones, you turn them into milestones!!

Long awaited. Had to write about him. My childhood hero whom i grew up watching. Life still comes to a standstill when he bats. So presenting some never fading memories.
# India V SA (Hero Cup Semifinal)SA needs 6 runs of the last over. A million dollar question, Azhar will give the ball to? Answer:How could he? No way, he cant bowl the last over. But in the end it proved out to be one of the greatest gambles ever taken. That curly haired boy bowled a perfect last over to give India a 2 run victory.
#India V NZ (Auckland)Sachin sent to open the innings for the first time due to absence of Siddhu. Some players are known for strokeplay, some for timing, some for sheer butchery. Tendular displayed all three traits at will.
# Australia in India (1998)No cricket lover can forget this. This was the year in which Sachin scored as many centuries and runs which many people do not score in their whole careers. Publicised as Sachin V Warne series. Warne definitely had a dream start in Chennai Test match first innings. But after this he started dreaming about Sachin. Sachin hit him all over the park with utmost authority, grace and ease. This didnt stop in India ,later in Sharjah he played two of the best innings in ODI. Sharjah series will be remembered for two things. Sachin and Tony Greig. This was the headlines "Sachin Tendulkar beat Australia, and won the Coca-Cola Trophy for India, on his 25th birthday.". Such was the Sachin storm that even 11 Australians, a Pakistani umpire and even a sandstorm werent enough.
# India V Zimbabwe(1998, Sharjah)You can call it Olonga's bad luck or whole Zimbabwe's bad luck that Henry Olonga got Sachin out of a short ball. Anyways what followed in the next match will haunt Olonga throughout hs life, in other words Warne has company :P. Sachin singlehandedly humbled Zimbabwe. He hit olonga, strang to every part of the ground. Even Ganguly's words could not abate the storm.
#Pakistan in India(1999,First Test)India needing some 271 runs to win were the favourites until they were 6/2 and then 82/5 but still match was not in Pakistan's hands as Sachin was still at the crease. He single handedly with a little support from Mongia took India within striking distance. India were 254/6 when the pain became unbearable. Years and Years of carrying Indian team on his back could be seen today. And in a rush to get over with it he played a shot which he would wish he never played. Our last 3 batsmen couldnt score the remaining 17 runs and in the end it was just 12 runs short of being one of the greatest innings of all times.
#World Cup 2003 Tendulkar's return was written off by everyone. And after the dismal NZ series Indian team was struggling. But Champions are those who rise when everone else is falling. He came back all guns blazing. A six of caddick through mid-wicket was a sight to watch. But the moment was India V Pakistan. India were chasing 287. Pakistan could hope for an easy victory especially when you have Wasim,Waqar,Shoaib,Razzak. But do these matter? The day belonged to someone else. He derailed Rawalpindi express in his first over itself with a six over deep point and followed by a classical straight drive.Rest is.....history.
#VB series final 2007.So Dhoni's young brigade wasnt showing much promise. What do we do now? He rose to the occassion yet one more time. Mind you, he is going to do the same again in next final ;).

Lifeline!!

Remember the famous game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati?". No, No, I am not going to leak out questions for the game show nor have I any stake in Start Plus, so not promoting the game show. But just wondering what would life have been if it was a KBC game show. If everyone had 4 lifelines to use to take life's decisions ;).
1. Which school you wanna join??
Ans. Guess you dont need lifeline for this. Your parents have already answered this one. ;)
2. Which tution to join??
Ans. Phone a friend ? :P
3. Which stream to take?
Ans. 50-50. Bio or maths (Commerce people dont seem to use lifeline on this question ;))
4. Which college to join??
Ans. Audience poll.
5.  To your girlfriend on the question of marriage?
And. Can we please flip the question? hehe.

PS- This questionaire has no connection with any living person.Certainly not me.

Nirvana

As I am nearing the end of the book "Fermat's last theorm"  I am starting to feel a li'l enlightened (dunno why :P). I have started reading mathematical puzzles on internet, also started devoting some time thinking about a few Number Theory axioms, rules. So decided to keep everyone else also in loop and share any thoughts on any new mathematical topics, statements i come across. This new post is entirely dedicated to such findings. I will keep on updating the post with new things i learn or find on the web. Most of them should be known to you but it doesnt hurt to go over them yet another time ;). Please post anything you want to add in comments section and I will edit the post :P. Lets start rocking.

[1]  25 + 27 + 29 + 53 + 54 =  52 + 72 + 92 + 35 + 45
Did you know the above equality?

[2] A very well known puzzle. Most of you must have heard of the puzzle but do you know the solution?

Imagine that you are a contestant on a television game show. You are shown three large doors. Behind one of the doors is a new car, and behind each of the other two is a goat. To win the car, you simply have to choose which door it is behind. When you choose a door, the host of the show opens one of the doors you have not chosen, and shows you that there is a goat behind it. You are then given a choice; you may stick with your original choice, or you may switch to the remaining closed door.

What should you do to maximize your chances of winning the car?

PS- Special mention of Mr. Suhas Rao who introduced me to the book and helped me realize the world beyond eating  and sleeping :).
